Zhernosekov and Freemasonry

21 Dic

The radical village schoolmaster Vasily Martynovich Zhernosekov breathed Revolutionary fire and brimstone over the young Nabokov on country walks “speaking of humanity and freedom and the badness of warfare and the sad (but interesting, I thought) necessity of blowing up tyrants” (Nabokov, Speak, Memory, Chapter 1). In this photo (from Jane Grayson’s Vladimir Nabokov, Penguin, 2001),  schoolmaster Zhernosekov flaunts a Masonic secret sign.

“Under Lenin’s regime, when all non-Communist radicals were ruthlessly persecuted, Zhernosekov was sent to a hard-labour camp but managed to escape abroad, and died in Narva in 1939.” (Nabokov, Speak, Memory, Chapter 1)
